Zinc/Air-Batteries as a Sensor for Oxygen
Varta Batterie GmbH (1998-1999)
Gaskatel was assigned by the company Varta to test the application of modified Zinc/Air
Batteries as an oxygen sensor. We tested the
cells regarding linearity, response time, selectivity, influence
of pressure and temperature. We also appraised their start performance
and their efficacy as a detector of dissolved oxygen. The material of
the sensor as well as the diffusion barrier were varied.
When we presented the Prototype at the Sensor Fair (Sensor Messe) in
Nuremberg it emerged as an eye catcher. Because of its possible mass
production by Varta this oxygen sensor has the potential to enable a
low-priced measurement of breathing air.
This sensor could definitely be used in medical technology or for interior
air monitoring or related applications. Unfortunately this product is not
yet available. To make it ready for the market it would be necessary
to find the right partner consortium.
